SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder)

Treating SAD with Homeopathy

SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is a type of mood disorder or depression which is triggered by seasonal changes, most commonly from Autumn to Winter, as the days shorten and the dark evenings set in. Years ago, people called it the “winter blues”.

Some people feel a change of mood as the shorter days come in from September on, but others can be seriously affected.

Feeling SAD from the change of season can cause

  • low mood
  • depression
  • mood swings
  • unexplained tiredness and fatigue
  • weight gain
  • craving carbs
  • oversleeping
  • difficult concentration

SAD can cause depression, anxiety, worries and stress during the winter months. People often feel better once the longer evenings and brighter days appear. Some people just hate the dark – “dark is like death”. Their energy drops significantly in the winter and they can find it hard to get out of bed in the mornings.

Some remedies good for SAD are

  • Aurum
  • Arsenicum
  • Nat-ars
  • Veratrum
  • Rhus Tox
  • Lycopodium

As a therapeutic support, sometimes I will prescribe remedies made from serotonin and melatonin alongside other remedies. IMPORTANT – these are the homeopathic version of serotonin and melatonin. Homeopathy is about “like cures like” so giving somebody a remedy made from a particular substance can stimulate the energetic body to react.
